Why was it so difficult to build the Panama Canal?
What will be an ideal response?
One of the difficulties of this project was the landscape and climate of Panama. Mudslides, earthquakes, and disease had brought the initial French construction of the canal to a halt. The government of Panama was also unstable, and Panamanians were revolting against Colombia. Finally, tropical rains and the Chagres River, which crisscrossed the proposed route of the canal, were geological challenges that required the expertise of American engineers.
