In what ways has the Internet impacted the delivery and consumption of the news?
What will be an ideal response?
Today’s major news organizations are multimedia ventures with all of the major newspapers, magazines, and news networks offering their own websites that include blogs and podcasts among other things. Free access is granted to some of these sites, which can damage an organization’s bottom line, thus affecting their ability to report the news. A citizen’s ability to search for specific topics and connect to related sites had led to the increased customization of web news. News of little interest can easily be bypassed. The Internet has also made possible the rise of myriad other sources of news that don’t necessarily adhere to the conventions, practices, and standards of more traditional media. News aggregators, which are sites and software that cull content from various sites and channel it into new and unique “newsfeeds” are another new source of news on the Internet. The Internet, through social networking, websites, and blogs, offers a degree of interactivity that far surpasses talk radio or television. These new electronic means of delivering and consuming the news allow for sharing and debate among people from across the globe. Politicians have taken advantage of the Internet to organize, raise funds and get out the vote.
