Describe the weaknesses of functionalist, conflict, and symbolic interactionist solutions to crime.

What will be an ideal response?

• Functionalist explain crime as a way for people to achieve a status they may not otherwise achieve. It is a weakness because it doesn’t address how to change these internal processes. It focuses the solutions on external controls.
• Conflict explains crime in terms of power differentials/economic inequality. They neglect to show that powerful political and economic elites manipulate lawmaking
and enforcement for their own benefit
• Symbolic Interactionist emphasize crime as a learned behavior, leaving out the genetic and institutional components.
