To test the competency of the saphenous vein's valves with manual compression, you would note if an impulse is felt when palpating the dilated vein with one hand while

a. raising the patient's leg 90°.
b. compressing the femoral vein with the other hand.
c. compressing the same vein 20 cm higher in the leg with the other hand.
d. the patient is supine and then while the patient is standing.

C
Manual compression tests the competency of the saphenous vein's valves. While the patient is standing, palpate the dilated vein with one hand. With the other hand compress the same vein 20 cm higher in the leg. Note if an impulse is felt. If the valves are competent, you will not feel the impulse because competent valves block transmission of the impulse. An impulse felt with manual compression is abnormal. Varicose veins are dilated, tortuous veins that are caused by incompetent valves. They are most prevalent in the saphenous veins of the lower extremities.
