Explain cultural relativism and give an example.
What will be an ideal response?
Cultural relativism is the argument that human rights are not universal and different cultures have different systems of rights. Some Eastern European and Asian leaders argue that societal harmony and order are high priorities in their countries, while Western values emphasize the rights of the individual and minority groups over the rights of a society as a whole. For example, Western nations view the denial of gay rights by Vladimir Putin in Russia to be abusive. However, Putin claims this practice is done for the good of Russian society because gay rights are contrary to Russia’s Christian culture.
