Describe how antibodies to cancer are being used to identify potential tumor associated
antigens.
What will be an ideal response
Recombinant DNA libraries from tumor cells can be used to express a vast variety of normal and tumor associated
antigens. When sera from cancer patients react against a particular protein and sera from normal people does not,
this protein is a candidate tumor associated antigen. In addition, mice can be immunized against human tumors
and monoclonal antibodies can be constructed from the mice B cells to potentially identify the tumor antigens that
induced them.
