How does the media socialize or "teach" children about gender?
What will be an ideal response?
Answers will vary but should discuss that as children grow up they are taught what behaviors are considered appropriate and inappropriate for their gender. For example, young boys may be taught what it means to "be a man," while young girls are taught what it means to "be a lady." Music, TV shows, and movies teach children more about appropriate behaviors by emphasizing gender roles. For example, women in music videos are often depicted as hyperfeminine, while men are depicted as hypermasculine. If a woman is depicted as masculine, she is often seen as an outlier because she is breaking societal gender norms. Children are taught early on that breaking away from ascribed gender norms is "bad" and will often result in negative attention.
