When Constantine shifted the capital of the Roman Empire to Constantinople from Rome, what was the result?
What will be an ideal response?
Answers will vary. By withdrawing from the west and focusing most of the resources and wealth in the east, Constantine set up the city named after himself to be at the crossroads of trade and to thrive economically. However, it was also a tacit admission that the west was a lost cause. More and more of the empire's resources gradually shifted east, including troops withdrawn from the increasingly barbarian west to protect the resources of the east. By 410, the empire had lost Britain, the Visigoths had sacked Rome, and most of the west was under barbarian control. The east continued to appoint puppet emperors who reigned from Ravenna until the last one, Romulus, was deposed in 476.
