Critically evaluate the relative deprivation theory of social movement.

What will be an ideal response?

Answers will vary. Relative deprivation theory helps explain why some social movements emerge. Critics point out, however, that there is a certain degree of relative deprivation in all societies, but people do not always react by forming social movements. Relative deprivation theory also does not explain why some people join movements even though they do not see themselves as deprived, and do not expect to gain anything personally if the movement succeeds(Gurney and Tierney, 1982; Johnson and Klandermans, 1995).
