A manager’s first obligation is to the organization’s performance rather than to individual employees. Therefore, it is his or her job to confront problem employees. Not taking action with problem employees because the manager feels uncomfortable confronting them, feels sorry for them, or likes them does not help either the manager or the employee. Not only do problem employees negatively affect their own productivity, but they also cause more work for the manager and other employees. Problem employees lower employee morale, as others resent them for not pulling their own weight. Team members may use clan control to pressure problem employees to perform to norms and standards. Thus, it is critical to take quick action with problem employees.
