Researchers have never found bilingual programs to be harmful to students, and the programs are often beneficial for the achievement of Latino students in English as well as in subjects they learned in Spanish. Bilingual education can also increase students' self-esteem. Also, the learning of a second language is facilitated by skills in one's native language. Cooperative learning programs have been particularly effective both in improving the outcomes of Spanish reading instruction and in helping bilingual students make a successful transition to English-only instruction.
