Preservice teachers are optimistic and idealistic, perhaps unrealistically optimistic about their future teaching performance. The danger occurs when the realities of classrooms shock beginning teachers, who then feel as though they haven't been prepared for the realities of teaching. Being aware of this possibility makes them realize that they may be somewhat shocked when they begin teaching. However, as they gain experience, competent teachers' confidence again begins to increase.
