What are the factors that contribute to the variation in growth patterns seen in young children?
What will be an ideal response?
Growth patterns vary individually. Much of the variation is due to heredity, but environmental experiences are involved to some extent. A review of the height and weight of children around the world concluded that the two most important contributors to height differences are ethnic origin and nutrition. The urban, middle-socioeconomic status, and firstborn children were taller than rural, lower-socioeconomic status, and later-born children. The children whose mothers smoked during pregnancy were half an inch shorter than the children whose mothers did not smoke during pregnancy. In the United States, African American children are taller than non-Latino White children.
