Explain how and why there are large areas off of the Louisiana coast that support no marine life?

What will be an ideal response?

A dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico exists off the coast of Louisiana because of oxygen depleted water from the Mississippi River.  The Mississippi River Basin includes major agricultural states like Kansas, Iowa, and Illinois.  Runoff from fields has contributed vast amounts of nutrients to the river systems in this basin.  The nutrients promote the growth of large algae blooms.  When the algae dies, most of the dissolved oxygen is depleted by the bacteria that eat the dead algae.  Most aquatic species cannot survive in such low oxygen levels.
