a. Denial-of-service attacks are any attacks intended to compromise the availability of networks and systems. Both network and application attacks are designed to overwhelm systems, resulting in performance degradation or interruption of service.
b. The four types:
1. Line-of-sight devices use devices that temporarily or permanently disable digital circuits either at close or long range.
2. Worms programs slow down computer systems by taking up significant resources for their self-replication.
3. flood attacks—a concerted effort to overwhelm the computer system with connection requests
4. subversion of intrusion detection systems—hidden software or hardware artifice that create a “backdoor” known only to the attacker
