Define the two types of amnesia that are based on the type of information that is forgotten. Discuss how amnesia affects implicit and explicit memory. Then name the two major biological features associated with Alzheimer's disease.

What will be an ideal response?

The two types of amnesia are retrograde and anterograde. Retrograde amnesia wipes out many memories that happened before the brain injury. This is the type of amnesia Doug Bruce had when he woke up on a train with no idea who or where he was. Anterograde amnesia wipes out memories that happen after the brain injury. Henry Molaison's brain injury prevented him from making most types of new memories after his surgery at age 18.
Amnesia affects explicit and implicit memory differently. Experts used to believe that it was impossible for anterograde amnesiacs to create new memories. Although it is true that anterograde amnesiacs do poorly on intentional-retrieval tests, they can improve on tasks that require implicit memory.
An increasingly common type of memory loss is associated with Alzheimer's disease. The two major biological features associated with Alzheimer's disease are plaques (proteins that develop in synapses) and tangles (protein fibers that develop in neuron nuclei).
