• Basic knowledge – A probation and parole officer should have a working understanding of psychology, sociology, criminal statutes, police operations, and court and correctional systems.
• Individual characteristics – A probation and parole officer needs the ability to relate to all offenders and to deal with their sometimes subtle or overt hostility, to exercise authority in an appropriate manner, to work well with other staff members, to organize work properly, and to prepare written reports in a coherent and timely manner.
• Probation and Parole agency – The probation and parole officer must be willing to accept the responsibilities engendered by working for a public agency that handles offenders and to enforce its rules and adhere to its regulations.
• Other agencies – The probation and parole officer has to be able to deal effectively with many kinds of agencies and persons, usually divided into criminal justice (police, prosecutors, judges, and correctional officials) and social services (treatment, welfare, employment, and educational agencies)
