Explain the notion of tabula rasa and how this idea influenced today’s thinking about compensatory education.

John Locke introduced the idea of tabula rasa. He argued children are like blank slates who learn through direct experiences, activities, and sensations. This environmental point of view shaped later theorists’ thinking about sensory experiences such as Montessori’s thinking about sensory training in early education. These ideas are still in use today as we tend to believe that children of all abilities have the capability of learning when given the right sensory stimulation and environment in which to learn. Thus, we see children of varying abilities working in classrooms side by side, completing tasks appropriate to their cognitive abilities.
