What are some of the theories offered to explain the popularity of animals in Paleolithic art? How do the representations of animals and humans differ in Paleolithic sculpture and painting? What is the difference between the optical and descriptive approaches to image making?

What will be an ideal response?

Prehistoric people often represented their world and beliefs through visual images. Their lifestyle depended on hunting and foraging food, and later on agriculture. Prehistoric people often followed animals throughout their migrations, so they would have a steady and dependable food source and would be able to obtain food wherever they went. This created a close connection between them and their environment, which influenced there early works of art to depict some of these animals which sustained them. In Paleolithic art, they wouldn't depict pictures of humans. Rather, they might carve a picture of a human body, and place and birds head on it. One theory is that they don't want to portray a human dace because they think it will take the soul from them. Another reason is that perhaps they wanted to decorate the caves with animals because it was so important to their existence. Another theory is that they believed if they could capture an animals image, they could capture the animal in a hunt. They also could have used the carvings on the wall to recount their hunting and what happened. A descriptive approach is not as realistic as an optical approach, but it does contain a deeper and more complex description, with more details and information.
