Attendance at a conference
One of your friends from your student days who is now working in the oncology ward of your hospital challenges you with this question: ‘When are you going to take up real nursing' again?' What two (2) examples of perioperative patient care would you describe as ‘real nursing' in response to this question? Provide rationales that explain how these examples of your practice as a ‘real nurse' reflect the philosophy of perioperative nursing and patient-centred care.
What will be an ideal response?
Answer:
The answer will depend on the nurse's individual experience. There are many professional associations relevant to perioperative nursing practice include ACORN and the PNC NZNO, as well as state-based groups such as PNAQ, NSW OTA and VPNG. In addition, there are numerous professional associations and other specialties that also have a high level of relevance to perioperative nursing practice such as the Sterilisation and Research Advisory Council of Australia (SRACA), the Nurses Association of Short Stay Facilities (NASSF) WA and the Australian College of Infection Prevention and Control (ACIPC).
