What is a subsidy? Describe the role of subsidies in natural resource management
What will be an ideal response?
A subsidy is a government giveaway of publicly owned resources, or can consist of cash or a tax break. It is intended to encourage certain activities while discouraging others. Subsidies can be used to promote sustainable activities, although more often they have been used to prop up unsustainable ones. Subsidies for mining and coal industries, and the money spent to build roads so that logging companies can harvest timber in our national forests, are some examples.
