Compare individualistic and collectivistic cultures. Briefly discuss your own (native) culture in terms of these values.
What will be an ideal response?
- An individualistic orientation stresses self or personal goals and achievements over group goals, an "I" consciousness, and a tendency to focus on individual accomplishments. Individualistic cultures value each person's autonomy and privacy. They pay relatively little attention to status and hierarchy based on age or family connections.
- A collectivistic orientation tends to put aside individual goals for the well-being of the group. Collectivistic cultures value group goals and emphasize group harmony and cooperation. Communication in collectivistic cultures is often clearly based on the status and hierarchy among group members, loyalty to the group, and honor for one's family.
