Ans: Time-out is an intervention that removes the student from a situation that is reinforcing the inappropriate behavior. Seclusion time-out is when the student is removed from a situation that is encouraging and maintaining the problem behavior and placed in a neutral environment (an isolated room). Seclusion time-out should be used (1) when a student’s actions pose a clear, present, and imminent physical danger to him or her or to others and (2) when less restrictive measures have not effectively de-escalated the risk of injury.
