Discuss the geographic inequities within China which have widened since the 1980s.
What will be an ideal response?
The massive Chinese economic expansion which began in the 1980s and continues to present day has not been uniform. Development (starting with the establishment of Special Economic Zones) has primarily been in urban areas along the coast. This has resulted in vast income disparities between the prosperous coastal provinces and the rural interior which has remained poor. The end result has been a massive internal migration of Chinese from the poor rural interior to the wealthier coastal provinces, which in turn has triggered a host of social issues, such as urban overcrowding and access of municipal resources.
