The Monitoring the Future project began at the University of Michigan Survey
Research Center. It is funded by grants from the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the
National Institute of Health. It began in 1975 and is conducted yearly. Data are collected
from about 50,000 students in about 420 public and private middle and high schools. It
collects data on the use of drugs, perceived risk of using, the level of disapproval of use,
and the perceived availability of drugs. It collects data on a wide variety of drugs, both
legal and illegal.
