Explain why a pregnant woman should not have an abdominal X-ray and identify the possible consequences to the

fetus if she does. What will be an ideal response?

ANSWER: Pregnant women should avoid all unnecessary X-rays. Radiation, especially medical X-rays,
can be a teratogen. The human embryo is most sensitive to teratogens during the early stages
of pregnancy. Large doses of radiation during weeks 2 –18 can affect the brain and central
nervous system and significant radiation exposure before birth can increase the risk of cancer
later in life. Pregnant women should avoid all unnecessary X-rays.
