Briefly describe the role of alternative licensure. What is its purpose? How effective has it been to date in preparing teachers?
What will be an ideal response?
ANSWER: Suggested answer: One of the major purposes of alternative licensure is supplying teachers when states experience shortages. Because of many of the commission reports during the early to mid-1980s that sharply criticized the quality of education majors and the quality of teaching in public schools, alternative licensure received attention as a way of luring into teaching liberal arts graduates and people with extensive backgrounds in math and science. The alternative license programs vary widely from state to state, and at this point there are few data demonstrating their effectiveness in preparing teachers.
