Discuss the impact of time on the quality of instruction. Name two factors that impact the amount of time available for learning. Discuss the factors that negatively impact time for learning. How can you address these factors in a proactive manner?
What are some steps you can take to protect instruction time?
What will be an ideal response?
The amount of time available for learning depends largely on two factors. The first is allocated time or the amount of time that the teacher schedules for instruction and then actually uses to teach. The other is engaged time, the amount of time students pay attention and are involved in the lesson. Both kinds of time are affected by classroom management and discipline strategies. If students are well behaved and motivated and have a sense of purpose and direction and if the teacher is well prepared and organized then there is plenty of time for students to learn whatever it is the teacher wants to teach. There are many factors that negatively impact teaching time including interruptions, misbehavior, in addition to poor transitions between and during activities. A comprehensive, proactive classroom management plan and the intentional teaching of transition behaviors can help eliminate time wasters.
