Discuss the concept of reintegration in regard to students who have been excluded from school. What role does alternative education play in the reintegration of excluded students? Provide some examples of the services and resources that might be offered to reintegrating students that may help with successful reintegration? Who is most likely to be placed in an alternative educational placement? How many states allow for alternative education placements?

What will be an ideal response?

At a minimum answers should explain that reintegration refers to reentry back into
the classroom, or through placement in an alternative educational program following
expulsion or dropout. Not all alternative education placements are effective--some may
even exacerbate existing problems. More effective reintegration can be achieved
through the use of individualized reintegration plans to connect students and their
families with necessary support services. Examples of services will vary across
students. Alternative education placements are more likely to be used in urban districts
with high minority enrollments and in districts with high poverty concentrations.
Currently, 42 states allow or encourage the use of alternative educational placements
for students, leading to 64% of school districts having at least one alternative school or
program.
