After the Boston Marathon bombings in April 2013, the New York Times asserted that previously, the "United States was strikingly free of terrorist attacks, partially because of far more aggressive law enforcement tactics." Several other GWOT programs have shortcomings and have received negative feedback that undermines their original purpose of helping control terrorism. For instance, U.S. military interventions in Iraq and Afghanistan have heightened unfavorable views of the United States in the Middle East, precisely where Washington is trying to increase its influence, as have reports of conditions at Guantanamo Bay. For example, prisoners have been subjected to aggressive interrogation practices, including physical assaults, insults such as desecration of the Koran, and questionable practices such as sexual touching by female interrogators and smearing of faux menstrual blood on prisoners' bodies to create embarrassment and humiliation. In addition, counterterrorist drone attacks also contain self-defeating features and they are extremely unpopular.
