Social workers who serve clients with physical and mental challenges are encouraged to adopt a number of practice behaviors. Identify and fully explain some of these behaviors, providing specific, original examples of these principles in practice.

What will be an ideal response?

Be person centered and involve people with physical/mental challenges (disabilities) in decision-making processes that directly affect their lives. Facilitate access and respect in a person's environment. Focus on helping the person and his or her support system cope well with challenging situations. Incorporate a strengths-based and resilience-oriented perspective to build on the person's inherent strengths and resources. Social workers should employ person-first language. They should help their clients in the areas of income support, education and rehabilitation, and genetic counseling.
