What will be an ideal response?

The medulla oblongata is the part of the brainstem that connects the pons and the rest of the brain to the spinal cord. All afferent and efferent tracts from the spinal cord either pass through or terminate in the medulla oblongata. It also contains nerve centers instrumental to the regulation and control of breathing, swallowing, coughing, sneezing, and vomiting. Other centers in the medulla regulate heartbeat and arterial blood pressure, thereby exerting control over the circulation of blood.
