Discuss the role of hydrolysis in using chemical energy to produce ATP
Hydrolysis reactions result in the breakdown of glycogen to glucose, triglycerides to fatty acids and glycerol, and proteins to amino acids. This breakdown allows storage forms to be converted to their smaller constituents, which are the immediate reactants of energy-producing pathways. The chemical energy stored in glucose, fatty acids, and amino acids cannot be used until it is transferred to ATP.
