Cartilage is an avascular connective tissue. Few, if any, blood vessels travel through cartilage. Instead, the blood supply to this tissue is limited to the outer sheath called the perichondrium. Oxygen and nutrients must diffuse from the perichondrium through the ECM to reach the chondrocytes and chondroblasts. Cartilage cells have a limited capacity to divide and often heal by fibrosis, producing scar tissue, if damaged. By contrast, bone regenerates easily through the division of its immature cells known as osteoblasts. Bone also has an abundant blood supply. Damaged cartilage often heals by fibrosis while damaged bone regenerates and function is completely restored.
