Explain the differences and importance of direct and cross-examination

What will be an ideal response?

Direct examination is conducted by the party calling the witness. They tend to have open-ended questions for which the witness should be aware of at least what type of questions will be asked. Cross-examination is questioning by the opposite party and is often aggressive and hostile. The questions are often close-ended and only a yes or no response is directed. In addition, there is a lack of preparation for the witness that is testifying.
