The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) publishes the Uniform Crime Reports in which it lists the numbers of various crimes that have become known (mostly through reports by citizens) to the nation’s police departments. Victimization surveys examine people about their experience of being a victim. It is important to have both types as many people do not report crime to the police.
