Describe the important elements that are observed in infant gross and fine motor development
What will be an ideal response?
ANSWER: The motor cortex leads the way in the earliest stages of neural development. Movement is the primary vehicle of discovery for the developing child. The infant is born with basic reflex movements that gradually develop into voluntary motor movements? motor development is closely tied to sensory development. Motor activity and play should be more than just vehicles for letting off excess energy but should be recognized as forerunners of the more formal intellectual and cognitive areas of development. Children learn many basic concepts through movement. Motor skills develop in a sequence parallel to that of physical growth. Motor development supports concept development, which is closely tied to perceptual development. Gross motor skills precede fine motor skills. For example, the infant proceeds from reflexive motions, to mentally controlled arm movements, to using his or her hands to grasp objects. When infants are able to move about on their own, a whole new world of learning opens up.
