The standard treatment for Parkinson's disease is the use of L-DOPA, the precursor to dopamine. However, this treatment is severely limited because, as additional dopamine neurons die, more and more L-DOPA must be administered to have any compensatory effects. Any drug treatments currently used are limited because they do not slow the progression of Parkinson's disease; they simply help with available levels of dopamine.
