Using Bronfenbrenner's model as a framework, outline and briefly consider several different contexts that influence child and adolescent development
What will be an ideal response?
Bronfenbrenner's ecological model of the environment views the child's environment as a series of nested structures that each influence the child's development.
There is the microsystem, referring to relations between the child and the immediate environment; the mesosytem, referring to connections among the child's immediate settings; the exosystem, referring to social settings that affect but do not contain the child; and the macrosystem, referring to the overarching ideology of the culture. These nested systems all exist within a chronosystem, referring to the changes in people and environments over time. This model is helpful in framing our thinking about the contexts in which the child develops and how those contexts influence development. At the level of the mesosystem, parents, peers, and schools influence development. At the level of the exosystem, mass media, in the form of TV and computers, influences development.
