Explain what Candace West and Don Zimmerman mean in Doing Gender when they state that “gender is created through interaction and . . . structures interaction.” Provide an example to support your explanation.

What will be an ideal response?

Varies. They are essentially arguing that what takes place in social interactions is both the basis for gender (the attitudes and behaviors we expect of those we believe to be male and female), yet what takes place in interactions is also shaped/influenced by gender. So because many men will offer to change a tire for a woman, this helps establish and maintain the belief that men are competent with cars and women are not. This is an example of social interaction shaping gender. At the same time, the reason many men offer to assist women (or women ask for men for assistance) changing a tire in the first place is because we have the belief already that men are better with cars than women. This is an example of gender shaping social interaction.
