Explain how major heating and cooling appliances may work in opposition to one another, making the home less energy efficient.

What will be an ideal response?

Take for example a refrigerator and a freezer operating in an air conditioned home during the hot days of summer.
Both appliances use refrigeration units driven by electric motors to extract heat from their interiors and keep them
at the required low temperatures. But the excess heat removed is then vented directly into the kitchen where the
appliances are located. This heat warms the room and makes the air conditioning system work harder (consuming
more power) to keep the room temperature at a comfortable level. A cooking appliance such as a stove, grill or
toaster also adds heat to the kitchen which the air conditioning system must then overcome. Similarly, a hair dryer
can easily raise the temperature in a bathroom by 15 degrees or more, again making the air conditioning work
harder to overcome the excess heat.
