There are more older women than men and therefore more women who may live in poverty. Women tend to live alone and therefore are likely to only have one potential income source. Women, particularly individuals of color, have generally paid less into the Social Security System due to lower lifetime earnings. Upon retirement, these women have incomes that are at least close to or may be below the poverty line.
