What is the function of collective identity in the formation of a social movement?
What will be an ideal response?
Answers may vary but students should provide a definition of collective identity, which is the shared understanding of one's place in society. In addition to this, students may discuss that social movements are mobilized by people who share common hardships and concerns. LGBT rights movements are driven by people who share a collective identity (as well as allies who respect the LGBT collective identity). Without collective identity, social movements have a difficult time mobilizing as they typically lack uniform objectives.
