Ans: The neurobiology of trauma recognizes that individuals react to trauma both psychologically, as already discussed, and physiologically. Physiological responses are dictated by the brain. When a traumatic event happens, the HPA axis, which consists of the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, and adrenal gland, is stimulated. This sets of a chain reaction where the hypothalamus stimulates hormones to be released by the pituitary gland which, in turn, stimulate hormone release from the adrenal glands. The hormones released by the adrenals signal the body that a life-threatening event is occurring.
