Discuss the different number formats that can be used in Microsoft Excel 2016.
What will be an ideal response?
Answers will vary. The default format when numbers are entered is the General format, which, for the most part, displays values exactly as they are typed by the user. To make numbers easier to interpret, you can:?Set how many digits appear to the right of the decimal point.Add commas to act as a thousands separator for large values.Include currency symbols to identify the monetary unit being used.Display percentages using the % symbol.?The most common number formats are Accounting, Currency, Number, and Percentage. The Accounting format adds a dollar sign (or the currency symbol you select) one space from the left edge of the cell, inserts a comma as a thousands separator, sets two decimal places, aligns numbers by their decimal points one space from the right end of the cell, and encloses negative numbers in parentheses. The spaces between the dollar sign and the left edge of the cell and between the last number and the right edge of the cell leave room on either end for the parentheses that surround negative numbers. That way, the decimal points and the numbers will still align in a column.?The Currency format is similar to the Accounting format except the currency symbol is placed directly to the left of the number, numbers are aligned at the right edge of the cell, and negative values are indicated by a negative sign to the left of the number. The Comma Style button formats numbers in theAccounting format but without a currency symbol.?The Number format is used for general numbers, and includes two decimal places and negative signs. Percentage format changes the value to the decimal equivalent in hundreds, adds the % symbol after the number, and removes all decimal places. For example, if you enter 1 in a cell and then apply the Percentage format, the value is changed to 100%. Whatever format is applied to a number, you can change the number of decimal places displayed. When you decrease the number of decimal places shown, the values are rounded using standard rounding practices: If the number is five or higher, the value is rounded up and the number to its left is increased by one. If the number is four or lower, the value is rounded down and the number to its left remains the same.?The options for changing the number format are all available in the Number group on the Home tab. Please see the section "Entering and Formatting Data" for more information.
