Describe how you would apply a stretch to the hamstring muscles using reciprocal inhibition
Explain the recipient's position, your technique, and what you would say to the recipient as you lead him or her through the stretch (include the role of breathing).
What will be an ideal response?
Answer: For this hamstring stretch the recipient is lying supine, with his or her straight leg off of the table (flexed at the hip). I will stretch the hamstrings by gently pushing the leg further into flexion to its limit. Before I apply the stretch, I ask the recipient to push against my hands with about 80 percent of his or her strength (to contract the hip flexors) and hold for about 10 seconds. I am standing so that I can apply resistance to his or her attempts to lift the leg with the hip flexor muscles. Afterward, I say "relax," "take a deep breath," "slowly exhale." While he or she is exhaling, I apply the stretch.
