The existence of services for students with milder levels of impairment is a relatively recent occurrence. Why do you think this is so?
What will be an ideal response?
Answer: Answers may include a variety of responses, including the following:
(a) Many mild disabilities have low visibility; in the past, many children and youth with mild disabilities were simply overlooked.
(b) Life in earlier time periods did not require the high level of academic skills most affected by mild disabilities. Those who struggled in school simply dropped out and joined the work force in factories and on farms.
(c) Families lived in closer multi-generational groups in the past; members of the family who were less capable of managing independently were helped along by other family members; outside intervention was less needed and also less available.
