Discuss the methods that help in identifying a speech topic.

What will be an ideal response?

Good speech topics come from subject areas that one has some knowledge about and interest in. To some extent, analysis of the audience and topic selection will occur simultaneously.
A speaker can identify subjects by listing those that he or she thinks are important and he or she knows something about. Subjects may be related to careers that interest the speaker, his or her major area of study, special skills or competencies, hobbies, or even social, economic, and political interests.
As a topic is a specific aspect of a subject, a speaker can identify many topics related to one subject. Two methods for identifying topics are brainstorming and concept mapping.
Brainstorming is an uncritical, non evaluative process of generating associated ideas. When one brainstorms, one lists as many ideas as one can think of without evaluating them.
Concept mapping is a visual means of exploring connections between a subject and related ideas. To generate connections, a person might ask oneself questions about his or her subject, focusing on who, what, where, when, and how.
