Although the Supreme Court, like the appellate courts, is primarily a court of appellate jurisdiction, original jurisdiction exists when cases affect ambassadors, public ministers, and consuls or when a state is a party. Original jurisdiction is set forth in Article III, Section 2, of the U.S. Constitution.
