Briefly describe the "fighting crime" image in early American policing

What will be an ideal response?

After the New York City Police Department was implemented in 1845, the goal of "fighting crime" came into vogue for American police. The "fighting image" included requiring police officers to wear uniforms and to be armed. Although it was decades before all police in America would adopt the role of "crime fighters," it should be recognized that this was the initial sign of what was to come.
